WHAT HAPPENED TO SMALLPOX?
If you are my age, or even several years younger, you probably have
little scar on your arm from your smallpox vaccination. Once smallpox
was the most feared disease on the planet, but there has not been a
recorded case in about thirty years – the last reported case was due to
a lab accident in Birmingham, England in 1978.
Smallpox vaccination became widespread in the 19th century. After
intense immunization campaigns throughout the world, the World Health
Organization declared the world smallpox free in 1979. There is no
routine smallpox vaccination today, but vaccine is held in reserve in
case of terrorist attack. The only known live virus samples are stored
in labs in Atlanta and Moscow. Smallpox is the only disease that man has
vanquished from the planet (Discover, December 2007, 22).
Adam and Eve understood God’s warning. “But of the fruit of the tree
which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of
it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die” (Genesis 3:3). Since their
disobedience, illness, including smallpox, has been a part of human
life. As God blesses man with wisdom and resources, we pray that man
will vanquish other illnesses such as cancer or diabetes. The
consequences of sin continue, however.
Satan’s lie was, “Ye shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). And it surely
was a lie. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Just as
surely as the wages of sin is death, the only cure is the blood of the
sacrifice of the Great Physician, Jesus Christ. “Forasmuch as ye know
that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold,
from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But
with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and
without spot” (I Peter 1:18-19). Thank God!

God’s Word
Acts 9:1-6
1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the
disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest
2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that
if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might
bring them bound to Jerusalem.
3 And as he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light
shone around him from heaven.
4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him,
"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"
5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus,
whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the
goads."
6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me
to do?" And the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and
you will be told what you must do."
