What Does it Mean to be
Benevolent?
The Oxford English dictionary defines benevolent as:
Of the general frame or habit of mind: Desirous of the good of
others, of a kindly disposition, charitable, generous.
Being benevolent is a frame of mind we must have to be the
Christians we are supposed to be. It is an attitude within each of
us that causes us to habitually perform acts of kindness and
generosity to other people. This type of thinking is in direct
contradiction to that of helping only ourselves. The irony though of
thinking this way, benevolent, is the fact we are helping ourselves
get to heaven. Without acts of benevolence we are destined for hell.
In Matthew 25:31-46 we are told that those who commit acts of
benevolence to their fellow man will be considered for admittance
into the kingdom of heaven. We are told several things throughout
the New Testament what we are not supposed to do, but this is one
thing we are instructed to do if we want to go to heaven.
Where should we start our acts of benevolence? This should start
within our congregation, the household of faith, and work outward to
the world according to Galatians 6:7-10. There may be times that our
acts of kindness are taken advantage of and we certainly have to be
cautious about this. But this should not instill such a fear or
belief in us that our fellow man is so unworthy that we do nothing.
In doing nothing, we will be committing the one thing that separates
us from God; SIN. According to James 4:17, if we know someone is in
need and we do nothing for them then we have sinned.
We can give lip service to God all day long, but if we do nothing to
show that we believe and love him then what good is it? It’s useless
according to James 2:14-17. Faith without works is dead. The work we
are instructed to do is clearly defined in the Bible. If we want to
go to heaven, we have to adopt the attitude of benevolence.
*See Matthew 25:31-46; Galatians 6:7-10; James 2:14-17.

God’s Word
Hebrews 3:12-15 NKJV
12
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of
unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another
daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened
through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of
Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the
end, 15 while it is said:
"Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."
