THIRTY PINTS OF BLOOD

Charles Colson’s March 6, 2007 commentary highlights the contrast between Western values, influenced by Christianity, and Eastern values, influenced by Islam.  He cites three recent incidents of Muslim terrorists blowing up other Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the lack of outrage and concern in either the Western or the Muslim world.

He then tells the story of two Iraqi insurgents seriously wounded by an American helicopter as they were placing an explosive device intended to kill Americans.  The U.S. medical team found they could only save one insurgent’s life if he was given thirty pints of blood, and the blood bank was low.  The call went out, and quickly dozens of G.I.s lined up to donate blood.  Brian Suam stood at the head of the line.  When asked if it mattered that the blood would go to an insurgent, he said, “A human life is a human life.”

I have never seen a more dramatic example of worldviews in contrast, nor have I been prouder of an American G. I.  On one hand, we have the horrors of a civilization that values death—even the death of its own children—if by killing them it can hurt the infidels.  On the other side, we have a story that makes us realize just how deeply imbedded within American life is our Judeo-Christian heritage.  This heritage teaches that human life is sacred—even the life of an enemy who falls into our hands.

These stories make nonsense of the claim that there is no real difference between Christianity and Islam.  The class of civilizations is not only about a fundamental difference between ways of viewing God, reality, life, and life’s meaning; it’s also about good versus evil, life versus death.

Colson makes me thankful for the influence of Christianity in our culture, even if its truth is often perverted and twisted.  I am grateful to serve the One who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

God’s Word

Psalms 23  NKJV

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

Fireflies

Two boys from the city were on a camping trip.  The mosquitoes were so fierce the boys had to hide under their blankets to keep from being bitten.  Then one of them saw some lightning bugs, and said, “We might as well give up, they’re coming at us with flashlights!”
