News and Notes

A Brother Passes
Calvin Grimes, member and song leader at the Highway 9 congregation in Piedmont, died Monday evening at Gadsden Regional Hospital after a sudden illness. He served as assistant director for SCYC Camp for many years. Funeral arrangements are not known yet. Our prayers are with his family, especially his wife, Charlotte, who works with our Wanda Morris.

Ladies Shopping Trip
Several of our ladies went on a shopping trip to Chattanooga last weekend. We’re thankful they had a safe and enjoyable trip. Thanks to Cheryl Lambert for organizing this for our ladies.

Thanksgiving Boxes of Food
14 boxes of food for Thanksgiving meals were given to our widows and several others in our community this week. Thanks to all who brought food or gave a monetary donation for these boxes. A special thanks to Heath and Lauren Blair for shopping and preparing the food boxes. Dawn Blair had planned on preparing the boxes but she has been sick with an upper respiratory infection and was not able to prepare them. Heath and Lauren stepped in and did a great job. Thanks to Ed Lewis; Michael, Stacy, Austin and Carson Long and Tom Hodge for their help in delivering the food boxes.

Ladies’ Bible Class
The Ladies Bible Class meets at 10:00 a.m. every Wednesday morning. Charis Dickson is the teacher for this quarter.

Visitation
We will not have a Visitation Meeting this week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Outreach Meeting
Our next Outreach Meeting will be this Sunday, November 25th after evening services. We encourage everyone to attend as we try to reach out to others.

A Thought or two…

Many think of the church like a hospital. They really don’t want to go, but they’re glad it’s there when they have to.

Kindness is the oil which takes much of the friction out of life.

The really happy man is one who can enjoy the scenery when on a detour.

To handle yourself use your head; to handle others use your heart.

Life itself can’t give me joy,

Unless I really will it;

Life just gives me time and space,

It’s up to me to fill it.

Rejoicing for the Right Reasons

The seventy rejoiced about the wrong things. They rejoiced that the spirits were subject to them. (Luke 10:17-20) Jesus said they were to rejoice because their “names are written in heaven.” Let us rejoice:

Rejoice because you have been made new in Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (II Corinthians 5:17) The obedient believer has a new relationship. He is “in Christ’. A Christian is someone new because being in Christ gives us a reflection of Divine Glory.

Rejoice because your sins are forgiven. “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” (Ephesians 1:7) God’s love moved Him to send Jesus as a sacrifice for sins to make forgiveness possible. To become a child of God or to be restored to Christ sins must be forgiven. (Acts 2:36-41, Acts. 8:18-24) Forgiveness of sins in Christ is our greatest blessing.

Rejoice because you have future hope. “For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?” (Romans 8:24) Christians are saved now, but there is salvation in a much larger sense when this earthly tabernacle or body is put off. Our eternal inheritance provides hope through the worst times of life. The Christian’s true possession is not what he sees, but what he hopes for.

Rejoice because of God’s promise of eternal life. “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (I John 5:11-12) Eternal life is a life exempt from every kind and degree of evil, trouble or misery. Eternal life is only granted by God and eternal life is only to those that are in Christ.

Christians have reason to rejoice. Are you faithful in God’s service? If not get right with God today and you can rejoice for the right reason.

-Charles Box

God’s Word

Matthew 8:5-11 NKJV

5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,

6 saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented."

7 And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

8 The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!
