Editorial

“For you have the poor with you always…but Me you do not have always.” (Mark 14:7)

Jesus made this comment in the context of “a woman who came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard” who “broke the flask and poured it on [the Lord’s] head.” (v. 3). John says this was Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha (Jn. 12:3). The disciples complained because what she did seemed to them like such and expensive “waste.” They said the oil could have been sold and the money given to help the poor.

When the disciples criticized Mary for what they considered to be a “waste”, Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her” (vs. 6-9).

Notice again that Jesus said, “the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.” There are some merciful acts we can do most any time. But what Mary did was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: An aid to the Lord in His death. It was a comfort to Him and the cost was insignificant. It helped Jesus deal with the great burden of the cross. Mary helps us see that there is much more to life than the monetary cost of an act and that certain acts of kindness can help make a spiritual difference.

Ultimately, Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection provide the real answer to everyone’s life and death questions, whether rich or poor, clothed or naked, healthy or ill. The crucifixion of Christ is ultimately what all of us need to see and come to accept as the answer to life and all its difficulties. We especially need to consider this in view of eternity.

There will be tragedies and the poor will always be with us, and we must respond.

(Cf. Matthew 25:31-46) But our efforts to reach out must always be with a goal of making an eternal difference in people’s lives. For a failure to do so would be the greatest tragedy.

Roger Leonard

God’s Word

Hebrews 2:9-10 NKJV

9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Happy Birthday

Jan. 20 – Nancy Phillips
Jan. 23 – Jimmy Fazekas

Thank You

Hello everybody,

I hope all is well back home. I thank all of you for your prayers for me and my comrades over here during this past year. Please pray for a crew from my Brigade that just got hit a few days ago, they were one week from going home, thank God they are still all alive. We have appreciated all the support you have show either in communication with us or back home by your actions.

I will be heading home in just a few days back to my wife and daughter in Texas . I cannot wait to pick up Amy and Katie there on the 1st Cavalry Division Parade Field at Ft. Hood . I will be taking a 3 week vacation there in central Texas , laying low and spending time with my family. This coming year I will be going through some more training and so will not be rolled up into the next deployment cycle (Lord willing).

Things in my little piece of Iraq are a lot safer than they were 7 months ago; a difference of night and day from when we moved out here. These people finally have basic security through our combined efforts (US soldiers and the average Ahmed on the street). The Al Qaeda leaders have all but picked up and moved farther north. So over the next year this unit that is now replacing mine will have to help these local people with essential services and tying into the Iraqi Government.

I wish you all a great new year and pray you attain those new goals you set.
