“How was your trip?”

After spending two weeks in a third-world country, it’s hard to know how to respond when people ask, “How was your trip?”

I can’t respond that it was ‘wonderful’, because that wouldn’t explain all the heart-breaking things that I saw when I was there. It wouldn’t tell about the man with the broken leg, who had to wait 6 months to get it set for lack of money. It wouldn’t tell about the woman and man who lived together for 10 years because they could not pay the government fee for marriage. It wouldn’t tell about the little girl with the disfigured face due to an abscessed tooth that she couldn’t afford to fix. ‘Wonderful’ definitely wouldn’t describe the packs of stray dogs that wander the garbage-filled streets, or the families that would sadly look on as our team ate lunch. It also wouldn’t tell about the woman who dug through piles of garbage to find something worth selling so she could eat.

But I also can’t respond that my trip was ‘heart-breaking’, because that wouldn’t explain all the wonderful things I saw when I was there. It wouldn’t tell about the woman who offered us water during a Bible study, when water was all she had to give. It wouldn’t tell about the dozens of children who ran up to me each night at church for a hug. It wouldn’t tell about the smiles of school children, and how soccer games broke out spontaneously in the streets. ‘Heart-breaking’ definitely wouldn’t describe the sounds of singing praises to God in Spanish and English, or the look on someone’s face as they heard the Gospel for the first time. It also wouldn’t tell about the 71 souls who were baptized into Christ while we were there.

I think the best way to describe my trip is as a blessing. Through my past trips to Peru, God has opened my eyes to how a lot of the world lives. Because of that I have seen many heart-breaking – and many wonderful things. I am reminded of the verse:

“The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord!” (Job 1:21)

~Kacie Jackson

Editor’s note: Kacie and Eric had a safe and successful mission trip to Peru, for which we are thankful. Kacie has accepted a 1 year tour of duty with Latin American Missions in which she will be making 2 week mission trips to many Latin American countries. Let’s pray for Kacie as she prepares for this effort!

God’s Word

Ecclesiastes 12:11-14

“11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd.

12 And further, my son be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end and much study is wearisome to the flesh.

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all.

14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing,

Whether good or evil.”

Live and Learn and Pass It On

I’ve learned that the greatest physician in the world is optimism.  I’ve learned that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
