Michael Statom came forward last Wednesday night confessing sin and asking for the prayers of the congregation. Jan Ragsdale came forward Sunday morning confessing sin and asking for prayers for herself and for her brother, Kevin Edmondson.

Earthquake in Peru
The earthquake which rocked Peru last week has done much damage to the town of Ica, where Kacie and Eric did mission work 2 months ago. As of now, we know of no Christians who have lost their lives, but 80% of them have lost their homes and the whole town is devastated. As we pray for them, remember that contributions for relief can be sent to Forrest Park church of Christ in Valdosta, Ga. Also, the latest Latin American Mission Report is on the table in the lobby.

Men’s Meeting
Pat Lambert led us in a good Men’s Meeting this past Sunday. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 with Bob Freeman presiding.

Visitation
Seven went visiting last night (Monday). Thanks to those who volunteered.

Our Church Library
Deana Pendley and Pam Jackson have volunteered to manage our church library. When you need to check out a book, sign the card in the back of the book and give the card to Deana or Pam. When you finish with the book return it to either one of them. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in keeping our library in good order.

HELL IS HOTTER!

To say that it is hot in Alabama is an understatement! But, hell is hotter!

Today, Thursday, August 9th, the projected high temperature in Talladega is 101 degrees with heat index readings projected as high as 113. Friday’s forecast calls for a high of 102 degrees and a heat index of 114.

It’s summertime in Dixie ! It’s hot! But, hell is hotter!

Hell! Is it a fiery lake or a cold, empty absence of god? Is hell a real place of burning fire, or a state of mind reflecting a dark void emptiness distant from God?

In July, 1999, the late pope John Paul II, in his weekly Vatican speech said: “Hell…is the state of those who freely and definitely separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy.”

The implication of such a view is that hell is an abstract separation from God rather than a literal lake of fire as described in the Bible.

Albert Mohler, then President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary had this to say in response to pope John Paul II’s statement. “My concern here is the temptation to make hell a state of mind, to psychologize hell. As attractive as that may be to the modern mind, that is not the hell of the Bible.”

While I would disagree with Mohler’s theology, I agree with his statement.

Hell’s once burning popularity has “cooled off”. Surveys reveal that 70% of Americans believe in Heaven, while only 50% believe in hell. Few of those surveyed who believe in hell think they are going there.

To many hell is a “figment of the Jewish imagination” or a “baseless fear unbecoming the love of God.” Some religionists have treated hell as a joke, something to be laughed at, mocked, ridiculed or even to be ignored.

The writer of Proverbs stated in 14:9, “Fools make a mock of sin!” Hell is no joking matter! Ask the rich man in Luke 16!

Satan rejoices when hell becomes a little more than a curse word in some people’s vocabulary.

There was a time when men stood in awe of hell—and desired to go to heaven.

They had a healthy respect for its awesomeness, but today it is different!

Even in the Lord’s church, we hear little preaching on hell—who’s going there—the danger of hell—God’s punishment of the wicked.

Today it is “love—sweet love” until people suffer from synthetic diabetes due to too much sugar in their diet.

One preacher stated that he would not preach on the subject of heaven and hell.

When asked why, he said, “I have friends in both places.”

It is hot in Alabama and the South, but hell is hotter! In Matthew 25:41, Jesus said to those on His left hand, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

The weather is hot! But, hell is hotter!

In time, the heat wave will be abated, but not hell! It will last for an eternity!

Upon the earth, we can deal with the heat with shades, fans, air conditioning, water, relief shelter, etc. There will be no such relief provided in hell!

God sends no one to hell! Man, by his own stubborn rebellion, sends himself to hell! A man once got mad at something a preacher said and he remarked, “I don’t like him; I’ll never hear him preach again. I’ll die and go to hell first.”

He did!

GOD’S WORD

Luke 6:37-39 NKJV

37 "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."

The “Gap” Theory

This theory teaches there are two separate creations divided by a gap. It is said there was an initial creation in Genesis 1:1 and another creation involving the six days. Presumably, there was a gap between the two involving possibly billions of years. However, there is a very serious problem with this view as well.

Moses, the writer of Genesis, also penned the book of Exodus. In that book he also addresses the creation. From the Genesis account it can be logically concluded that the total of creation took place within the six days. However, the Exodus account is more precise, specifying a time frame. Exodus 20:11 reads, “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is…” So, the creation of heaven and earth mentioned in Genesis 1:1 is placed with the six days. Also, in Exodus 31:17 Moses reaffirmed this truth. “…for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth…” Therefore, gap theorists are forced to give an unnatural meaning to the days in Genesis one.

The scriptures could not be clearer. There are not two creations divided by a so-called gap, but only one creation of the six days, which included Genesis 1:1. So the question we ask is the: Do we take the gap theorists’ view of Genesis one or do we take the testimony of the inspired wittier? The answer is obvious.

Trying to harmonize an old earth theology with the scriptures is a futile effort. The word of God is simply too plain on this vital truth.
