Hard Times Are Here

In 1975, I was in Junior High School and the United States was in the throes of an economic recession.  My mother began what she called a “hard times bucket” in which she stored up flour, sugar, etc.  When I told my teacher, Mrs. Green, about Mama’s hard times bucket, her quick reply was, “Hard times are already here!”

In 2 Timothy 4:3, Paul wrote, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…” (emphasis added).  Brethren, those times are already here, and such is evident when we look around the brotherhood (Nation’s largest congregation adding instrumental service, Christian Chronicle (Jan. 2007), p. 8).

Sometimes we think “Why that could never happen here!”

ü      Before 9/11 we did not think that could happen here

ü      I never thought I would be robbed, twice!

ü      We cannot afford to be naïve

ü      It may be a matter of time, as with another terrorist attack, but if so, let it be in spite of what we do, not because of what we do

How can we protect the congregations where we worship?

ü      Be aware (Acts 20:28-31)

ü      “Trust but verify” (I John 4:1)

ü      Be Biblical—not PC nor preach pop psychology

ü      We need to heed the words of Paul to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:1-17)

ü      We need to learn from others mistakes

Let’s do all we can to maintain purity to doctrine and in practice.

God’s Word

Galatians 6:1-5 NKJV

“1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

5 For each one shall bear his own load."
