Friends and Faithful Brethren
Last week I spoke with a preacher friend and former classmate whom I
have not seen nor heard from in twenty-five years. It was good to talk
with an old friend, but there was more to this conversation than just
“catching up.” Let me tell you what I mean.
David Wright preaches for the Lord’s church in Parson, Tennessee. He and
I were in classes together at Alabama Christian College (now Faulkner
University). I remember David as a kind man, as a deeply committed
Christian, and as an excellent student (he was valedictorian and I was
not; let’s just leave it at that).
One thing David said last Monday really caught my attention. “I’m glad
to know you’re still faithful.” He went on to speak of some mutual
friends who have strayed from the truth. He spoke of one individual who
no longer “has any convictions.”
I am reminded of Philip the evangelist who was chosen as one of the
seven to oversee the benevolent work in the church at Jerusalem (Acts
6:5). Later Philip preached the gospel in Samaria and to the Ethiopian
nobleman (Acts 8:5, 26, 30). After that, Philip finally arrived at
Azotus (Acts 8:30-40) and is not mentioned again until Acts 21:8, some
20 years later, where he is still faithfully proclaiming the Gospel and
has raised faithful children.
John the apostle wrote, “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of
your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the
Father” (2 John 4). It does the heart good to know that some continue to
contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 3) and to preach the truth in love
(Ephesians 4:15). Indeed, it is a blessing to know of seven thousand who
do not bow the knee to Baal (I Kings 19:18).
Paul foretold of a time when some would no longer listen to the truth
(Timothy 4:1-3;
2 Timothy 4:1-4). But preach the truth we must, for only in the Gospel
of Christ is there power unto salvation (Romans 1:16-17). As the Lord
once asked, “When the Son of man comes, will He really find faith on
earth” (Luke 18:8)?

God’s Word
Galatians 6:1-5 NKJV
“1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are
spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering
yourself lest you also be tempted.
2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing,
he deceives himself.
4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have
rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
5 For each one shall bear his own load.”
