News and Notes

A Sister Passes
Our prayers are with the entire family of LaRue Turner who died last week after a lengthy illness. Sister Turner had been a member at East Gadsden for many years. In the last couple of years, she lived at Coosa Valley Health Care. LaRue is the mother of our Myra Pittard. LaRue leaves behind 11 children, 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Her funeral was this past Sunday at Crestwood Funeral Home.

House to House
We mailed out over 5,900 copies of the House to House publication last week. Thanks to Amy Stigers, Tom Hodge, Jack and Pam Jackson, Stephanie Bly, Peggy St. John, Wanda Laney and Nancy Phillips for their help with labeling, bundling and mailing out this good mission effort.

Good Used Clothing Needed for Guyana
Please bring any good used summer clothing, shoes and flip flops to our building and place in the small nursery. These items will be shipped to the church in Guyana. We need these items by January 15th. See Pat Lambert if you have any questions.

Ladies Bible Class
The Ladies will have their last class before the holidays on Dec. 13th. After class they will have a holiday luncheon at the home of Charis Dickson. We appreciate Charis and the great job she has done teaching the Ladies Class during this quarter. The class will start back in January and Kim Gott will be the teacher.

Ladies Cookie Exchange
All of our ladies are invited to the home of Pam Hodge on Saturday, Dec. 9th at 3:00 PM for a Cookie Exchange. Each lady should bring enough cookies to share and also a batch to send home with someone.

Holiday Meal and Party
We will have our annual Holiday Meal and Party on Sunday Dec. 10th after evening services. Please sign the sheet in the foyer if you plan to attend, and sign up for the food you would be able to prepare.

Each person will need to contribute $2.50 towards the purchase of chicken fingers. Please give your money to Pam Jackson.

Annual Progressive Dinner
The Annual Progressive Dinner will be Friday, Dec. 15th. The appetizers will be at the Fazekas home. The main course will be at the Gotts and the desserts will be at the Blys. Everyone needs to bring a gift for “Dirty Santa”. Please sign the sheets in the foyer if you plan to attend. Please see Kim Gott or Jaime Fazekas for more information.

Resource Room Workday

Buried Alive

On the Oregon Trail, at least some of the emigrants who died enroute to Oregon were buried alive. The reason why was because the survivors were in a hurry.

For many years, cholera ravaged the emigrants along the Oregon Trail. Whoever caught it was dead – no cure or treatment existed. Usually, the infected emigrant died in 24 hours or less. If an entire wagon train stopped for an elaborate funeral, it would slow their progress. Too many delays meant the pioneers might not get to Oregon before winter – and then everyone might perish.

So, on most wagon trains, the burials became shorter and shorter as more and more people died. Some even abandoned the terminally sick by the side of the Trail, where they would eventually die alone. The more human wagon companies elected a “watcher” to wait with the person while the wagons forged ahead. It wouldn’t take long for the watcher to catch up.

Many watchers were in such a hurry that they started digging the grave long before their infected companion was dead. Needless to say, watching your own grave being dug was probably quite disturbing. If you happened to linger too long, well, no one is for sure, but evidence strongly suggests that some were accidentally buried before they took their final breath.

That is disturbing, isn’t it? Yet, what is even more disturbing is that this very thing is happening today. There are many sick and diseased Christians that will soon wither away and die. They are spiritually diseased by the sins of the world (2 Peter 2:20-21). Their only hope is that some other healthy Christian will have enough compassion to see them nursed back to health (James 5:19-20).

Too often, sick Christians are left for their own burial. Their brothers and sisters in Christ are caring very little for their lost souls; they might assume that the church has already dug their grave. How does this happen? The same way it did on the Oregon Trail: we can become too busy to stop and help the sin-filled soul along the way. We have programs that must be accomplished; we have fellowship opportunities, worship assemblies, and fun activities. “If somebody falls off the wagon, they do so at their own peril.” Brethren, this ought not to be!

Perhaps, in the morning, it would do us all well to think of some person who has fallen away from the faith and decide what kind of effort we can put forth to help them – and I certainly do not mean digging their grave for them. I’m talking about helping them out of Satan’s grasp and helping them catch up with the rest of the wagon train (Jude 23).

God’s Word

Gen 22:1-4 NKJV

1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."

2 And He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
