CHRIST, OUR LIFE

Jerri Manasco

Paul wrote to the church at Colossae, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:4).  This valuable truth is one that needs to be reiterated over and over again!  Every Christian needs to contemplate the depth of significance in this wonderful statement of the inspired Paul for it is in this text that the essence of our whole purpose as God’s people is encased.

Christ is our life!  By him, in him and because of him we live!  Jesus asserted, “the thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).  The word “abundant” is from the Greek word that signifies superabundance or excessively; the Christian because of Christ is looking at a life that is excessively great and full.  It is not a life of mere philosophical reasoning or religious “have to’s” but it is a life that really makes a difference to him individually as well as ultimately affecting all those with whom he comes in contact day by day.

People become Christians because of Christ!  As sinners without Jesus, we were dead in trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1) and were missing out on the blessed fellowship with God and all that it provides.  Many lessons have been presented with the title, “Why I Became A Christian.”  Many reasons are offered such as: I became a Christian because of the forgiveness of sins, the peace, the hope, the salvation, etc.  But the real reason you become a Christian is BECAUSE OF Christ.  It is BECAUSE OF Christ that the forgiveness, peace, hope, and salvation [and all spiritual blessings, Ephesians 1:3] are ours for the taking by the incomparable grace of him who “…for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9).  In his grace toward us he was willing to forfeit for awhile the unimaginable glories of heaven to enter a human body and live as us, in the flesh, in order to be our bodily sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 10:1-13).

Christ is our life, because when we are Christians we want to let the world see in us a renewed focus on life’s real purpose.  Life is not meant for sensual and selfish gratifications.  Man is not an animal but is MAN made in the image of God, which image was tarnished by sin but regained in Christ in whom we are made complete before God (Colossians 2:10).  Life is meant as a time to honor him who made us and to enjoy the truly better things God has made for us.

If Christ is our life, we do not use the tongue profanely nor the body immorally (Colossians 3:5).  If Christ is our life, we do not seek selfish agendas but seek to deal peacefully and mercifully with others throughout the day’s confrontations (Colossians 3:8-15).  If Christ is our life, we seek to let his word guide us in our domestic and civic relationships (Colossians 3:18-25).  It is not society but Christ who determines our behavior—IF Christ is our life!

God’s Word

Genesis 18:16-19

16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way.

17 And the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing,

18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him."

Live and Learn and Pass It On

I’ve learned that the greatest physician in the world is optimism.  I’ve learned that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
