Building A Good Name Church In The Community

Solomon said, “A good name is rather to be chosen that great riches…” (Prov. 22:1). A good name is destroyed when God’s people misbehave. It can also suffer when enemies of the church purposely malign the Lord’s people with prejudiced statements and outright lies. We’ve suffered too much from both of these in recent times. Based on Acts chapter 2 the following are some suggestions of things we can do that will help build a good image of the church in the community.

Let the gospel be sounded forth in its purity and simplicity (vv.22-47). Take note of Peter’s sermon. The people were told plainly that they had crucified their Lord. Being cut to the heart with this news they wanted to know what to do about it, and Peter told them to “repent and be baptized” (v.38). This message was well received then, and will be today.

Let all members continue to worship regularly (vv.41,42). If members of a civic club are not faithful to attend club meetings their names are removed from the members list. If the community sees that we do not have enough conviction to worship regularly and attend to the church’s needs it is not likely the church itself will be much respected.

Let the church be compassionate in meeting other’s needs. The early Christians “had all things common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need” (vv. 44,45). As has often been said, “Others don’t care how much we know, until they know how much we care.”

Let its fellowship be sweet and complete. “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart” (v.46).

When we do these things we too will have “favor will all the people,” and we too will find that “the Lord added to the church daily such as were being saved” (v.47).

God’s Word

Isaiah 55:6-11 NKJV

6 Seek the LORD while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.

7 Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the LORD,
And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.

8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD.

9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

10 "For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there,
But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,

11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Live and Learn and Pass It On

I’ve learned that grandmothers are still girls at heart. They like pats, hugs and kisses.

I’ve learned that you should keep an open mind, but don’t be so open-minded that your brains fall out.
