BEWARE THE GOLDEN COMPASS
December 7, 2007 marked the release of a new
Christmas season “family fantasy movie” starring Daniel Craig, Nicole
Kidman, and Dakota Blue Richards. The film, The Golden Compass, is
based on the first novel in the His Dark Materials trilogy by British
writer Philip Pullman. The other novels in the series are The Subtle
Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Advertisements show the film to be a
fantasy and adventure film filled with talking animals and a cosmic
battle between good and evil.
Although Pullman says he hates C.
S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, there are many obvious parallels,
as the story begins with Lyra stepping into another world by passing
through a wardrobe. (Lucy passed through a wardrobe to begin the first
novel of the Narnia series, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.)
Pullman’s trilogy is actually an anti-Narnia.
Pullman is viciously anti-God, and anti-church
as well. Claiming to technically be agnostic, he told the U. K.’s Daily
Telegraph,
“But if there is a God, and
he is as the Christians describe him,
then he deserves to be put down and rebelled
against. As you look
back over the history of the Christian church,
it’s a record of tyranny.
How they have the bloody nerve to go on Thought
for the Day and tell
us all to be good when, given the slightest
chance, they’d be hanging
the rest of us and flogging the homosexuals and
persecuting the witches.”
It should come as no surprise to
us that the evil enemy in Pullman’s writings is the church, and the only
way that Lyra and the forces of good can win is to ultimately kill God,
which happens at the end of The Amber Spyglass. Lyra’s alethiometer
(golden compass) does not ultimately lead to moral truth. The movie may
be a good adventure story – but beware where the story ends. “There is
a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways
of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)

God’s Word
Judges 7:2-7 NKJV
2 And the LORD said to Gideon, "The people who
are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their
hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, 'My
own hand has saved me.'
"Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of
the people, saying, 'Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and
depart at once from Mount Gilead .' " And twenty-two thousand of the
people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 But the LORD said to Gideon, "The people are
still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them
for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, 'This one
shall go with you,' the same shall go with you; and of whomever I
say to you, 'This one shall not go with you,' the same shall not
go."
5 So he brought the people down to the water.
And the LORD said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps from the water with
his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise
everyone who gets down on his knees to drink."
6 And the number of those who lapped, putting
their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest
of the people got down on their knees to drink water.
7
Then the LORD said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped I
will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all
the other people go, every man to his place."
