Be not
A search in the New Testament finds that the words “be not” are found 65
times. Why would God through the inspired writers see the need to say
“be not” as many times as he did? Because He knew the possibility and
even the probability that his followers would be tempted to be or do
some of these things. Let’s consider some of the “be nots” of the New
Testament.
Be Not As Hypocrites. In Matthew 6:16. Jesus is speaking to his
followers in what we refer to as the sermon on the mount. He doesn’t
mention the Pharisees by name but we know that he was very critical of
the Pharisees and he referred to them as hypocrites. Earlier in this
chapter in verse 5 he makes a similar reference. Christ is making a
valuable point that applies to us today. Be not as the hypocrites; do
not be as those that say one thing and do another.
Be Not Troubled. Matthew 24:6. Many Christians are troubled with
personal problems, some with financial problems, some have problems with
other people, some are troubled with the elders or the preachers or
someone else within the congregation. When we are troubled with issues
of life then our service to the Lord is affected and this is when Satan
is working overtime. If you are discouraged, Satan is happy. If you are
troubled, then Satan is happy. Let me encourage you as Christ has to be
not troubled.
Be Not Deceived. Luke 21:8, I Cor. 6:9, I Cor. 15:33, Gal. 6:7. Perhaps
the one thing that Satan uses the most and the best is his ability to
deceive us. He deceives people into being religious but not righteous.
He deceives people into thinking that they can go to heaven regardless
of how they live. He deceives us into thinking that it does not matter
who we associate with and he deceives us into mocking God by not
following His teaching for our lives. Be not so deceived.
Be Not Highminded. Rom. 11:20 & I Tim. 6:17. Be Not Wise In Your Own
Conceits. Rom. 12:16. All of these verses and both of these “be nots”
refer to our humility. We need to be humble in our dealings with other
people, in our dealings with the scripture and in our dealings with
ourselves.
Be Not Conformed. Rom. 12:2. Worldliness is a problem that we are warned
against repeatedly in the New Testament. And this is a warning against
worldliness. Do not be what the world wants you to be but be what God
wants you to be. Rather than becoming conformed to what the world wants
you to be; allow Christ to transform you.
Be Not Consumed One Of Another. Gal. 5:15. This is being addressed to
Christians. Why? Because God realized that it is human nature and
therefore the nature of many Christians to try and tear one another down
rather than build one another up.
Be Not Weary In Well Doing. II Thess. 3:13. The Christian life is
compared to a race. It is referred to as a marathon. It is not enough to
start the race well, but we must finish it well. The only way to finish
well is to not grow weary in well doing.
All of these “be nots” and others are given to us because God knows us
better than we know ourselves. He realizes our weaknesses and the areas
wherein we are likely to fall short. Let us realize these as well and
strive to live in such a way as to “Be Not Moved Away From The Hope Of
The Gospel…” Col. 1:23.

God’s Word
1 Peter 2:1-8
1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all guile, hypocrisy,
envy, and all evil speaking,
2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you
may grow thereby,
3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men,
but chosen by God and precious,
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual
house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I
lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame."
7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those
who are disobedient,
"The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,"
8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They
stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were
appointed.
