Ananias and
Sapphira
"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians.
Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." – Gandhi
This quote means a lot to me. Gandhi was a great
leader, but not a Christian. One of the reasons was the hypocrisy he
saw in ‘Christians’ around the world. A good example of this is the
account of Ananias and Sapphira.
At the end of Acts 4 we read a beautiful story of a
community coming together and donating large amounts of money out of the
goodness of their hearts to further the cause of Christ. Many people
were moved, sold their land, and laid the money at the apostles’ feet.
In chapter 5 we read of an infamous couple who
wanted the glory of giving their money to God, but didn’t want to make
the actual sacrifice. We all know the story – they sold their land,
kept some money from themselves, but acted as if they gave it all to
God. I can picture Ananias in my mind: walking forward in the church to
donate his money, maybe with his head bowed low, and all the members of
the community whispering about how great of a Christian he was for his
actions.
We know that this couple was punished severely for
their deeds. The first time I read this story, it seemed that the
punishment didn’t fit the crime. After all, Ananias and Sapphira DID
give to God – and probably a lot more than others. Who cares if they
didn’t give everything they had?
Well, we know that the amount of money was not the
point. The point was that instead of serving others out of the goodness
of their hearts, they did it for the good name it brought them. They
used the Lord’s name in vain – by pretending to be what God wanted them
to be for show.
Let us never be like this couple. Let us always
worship and serve God because we love him, not because it makes us look
honorable! May no one ever say of us that “we Christians are unlike our
Christ.”

God’s Word
Micah 7:18-19 NKJV
18 Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity
And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His
heritage?
He does not retain His anger forever,
Because He delights in mercy.
19 He will again have compassion on us,
And will subdue our iniquities.
You will cast all our sins
Into the depths of the sea.
