LASCIVIOUS APPAREL
Ancient Israel was the church in the
wilderness (Acts 7:38). As God’s “called out assembly”, they were to be
distinctive in life. The laws of Judaism were designed to insulate
Israel from the influence of the pagan nations. However, they loathed
distinctiveness, envied the heathen and desired to be formed in their
likeness (I Sam. 8).
The church of Christ is to be in the world, but not of the world (John
15:19). Every member is to be distinctive in every aspect of life. In
speech, priorities, attitudes and general demeanor at home, work,
worship and play, the Christian should be easily discernible by the
world.
A key area of distinctive Christian behavior is one’s manner of dress.
Tragically, some members of the church are determined to mimic the world
with regard to attire. With the advent of spring, nature dresses while
some in the church undress. The warmth of spring’s sun commences a
nauseating parade of bare flesh that nullifies purity and fosters lust.
The various stages of nudity characteristic of some professing
Christians are a spiritual disgrace. Such conduct is at ware with
pureness of thought and holiness of life. One cannot “be holy as God is
holy”
(I Peter 1:16) while exposing his body to the public eye. Following in
the steps of Christ (I Peter 2:21) will not lead one into a bathing suit
in a public setting. Tarzan and Jane outfits belong in the jungle.
The shame that attended Adam and Eve’s physical state subsequent to
their sin is yet attached to the public exposure of one’s body (Gen.
2:7). The blushing cheek may have vanished, but the scar of shame
remains. The reality of sin with regard to immodest dress does not
depend upon man’s recognition and acceptance thereof.
Missionaries attest to the power of the gospel in clothing the heathen.
Members of the church who make public appearances in scanty attire have
rejected the fashioning influence of the gospel for the molding power of
the world. Lascivious apparel is a work of the flesh and “they which do
such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Gal. 5:21).
[Brother Frank Chesser wrote the above article over 20 years ago, and
the problem he addresses has only gotten worse. Just the hint of spring
has already brought out the kind of apparel discussed. Christian, will
you be guilty of conforming to the world in dress this spring, or will
you be transformed by the word of God (Rom. 12:1-2)?]

God’s Word
John 10:7-11
7 Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
I am the door of the sheep.
8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep
did not hear them.
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will
go in and out and find pasture.
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have
it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the
sheep.
